Project Description
The Montreal Metro is known around the world, not only as one of the most vast and efficient transportation networks in North America, but for the fact that during its conception for expo 67, it was decided that nearly every station would house a work of art. Something that helped to secure its reputation as an international art hub. To celebrate its 55 years, I was tasked with a publication that would showcase every work of the Montreal Metro and the artists behind them.
Process
Coming up with design systems, used for the organization of information is a huge part of publication design and an ability that I needed to prove for this project. Conveniently, the Montreal Metro itself is already quite well organized, with consistent design solutions at every station, colour coated lines and intuitive way finding. I therefore decided to borrow the design elements of the Montreal Metro in my own book design. If the typeface felt familiar that's because it's Univers Condensed, the exact typeface used to identify the stations on every platform. In fact every station of my book was identified the same way, including the iconic coloured circle, showing the stations line. The goal was to create a reading experience comparable to that of taking the actual Metro and simulating the feeling of rolling into a new station with every page turned.
Outcome
The outcome was a surprisingly thick book, revealing just how much art is in the metro. Some of which I've been walking past for years without noticing and some of which have been important parts of my commuting experience ever since I started taking the Metro.
