Project Description
Marc Ribot is an American guitarist whose music spans a wide range of genres. In September 2010, he released the album Silent Movies. A series of 13 ambient solo guitar recordings used for the soundtracks of films, some released, some in the making and some imaginary. I was tasked with the promotional design for a concert that would be played at Montreal's Cinema Imperial.
Process
A lot of research followed the project brief. I admired the fact that his music did not follow one coherent style and had taken many different forms throughout his career. There was a noticeable spirit of experimentation present in his music. The same could be said about Silent Movies. There was no one song that spoke for the entire album, which posed as a challenge in some ways but an invitation for creative liberty in other ways. One coherent element of the album was the aspect of mysticism and unknown which invited the listener to let their own imagination take control. Listening to the album felt a little bit like navigating through a dream, and the title "Silent Movies" captured this. I took this interpretation and ran.
Outcome
The final outcome was a poster that combined several elements to achieve the dream like feel I had felt while listening to the album. Through type, texture and colour, I created a visual simulation of the albums mystic and spirit of experimentation.
